My Book Review of The Heretic's Daughter

The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent left me without words. This book tells of teenage girls encouraging towns people to execute innocent people with lies and rumors of witchery. That is truly scary but it happened just the same! The Heretic's Daughter made me feel compassion towards the people who were persecuted in Salem, Massachusetts trials in 1962. The Heretics Daughter is a letter written by Sarah Carrier, the daughter of a woman named Martha Carrier who would do anything to save her family including sacrifice herself. Sarah was just 9 when the witch trials took place but these events are horrific enough to haunt a person for a lifetime.

The Heretic's Daughter wasn't just a story of the Salem Witch trials but also a story about a family that has struggles like any normal family. The Heretic's Daughter also summerizes Sarah's and Martha's strained mother and daughter relationship. Many hardships followed the Carrier family. None compared to the accusations that were to come.

The Puritans depicted in The Heretic's Daughter looked for any reason to condemn people of witchery. These people where willing to believe rumors. They saw small pox, cows dying, odd birth marks, and many other happenings as signs of witchcraft. >The Heretic's Daughteris a tell of a tragedy that should never have happened.

Kathleen Kent captured the true meaning of loyalty when she wrote The Heretic's Daughter. She brought life into people who have been dead for centuries. She brought the Salem Witch trials to her readers and gave them a glimpse of a horrific time in history wherehysteria claimed 19 lives including Martha Carrier a wife and mother of 5. Kathleen Kent is a 10 generation descendant of Martha Carrier so it is appropriate that she tells the events that lead to Martha's death.

The Heretic's Daughter was a good read. I felt so many emotions when reading this book such as anger, love, and compassion. I liked The Heretic's Daughter but it is a one time read for me. I found it to heart wrenching for a second read. I might watch a movie based on this book but I doubt it could capture the detail and emotions about the Salem Witch trials like The Heretic's Daughter did. If you like history or stories of witches and persecution then this is the book for you.

You can purchase a copy of The Heretic's Daughter here for roughly $10.
