  1. A tradition I have with my family is having a late dinner as a family, usually nothing fancy, then going to midnight mass. After midnight mass we all go home and sleep a couple of hours. Early christmas morning, we have breakfast (crepes, eggs, sausage, bacon, etc.) We don't do the usual gift exchange on Christmas as we give throughout the year.

  2. Every Christmas my husband and I watch It's A Wonderful life. We started this before we got married. Two years ago he proposed during my favorite part (What do you want Mary? You want the moon...) This is our first married Christmas and I can not wait untill we watch it!

  4. a tradition we enjoy is doing something special for 'twelve days of Christmas'. We go to various church events around town, see the lights at the local park, walk around our subdivision to see the house lights, go out for an egg nog shake at Dairy Queen, etc. Different Christmasy things. W e like it.

  6. We gather our sons on Christmas Eve for dinner. And we open our presents to each other at that time. We open them one by one, and each gets to see and comment on the gifts.
There are always at least one or more gag gifts, and we laugh and laugh ~ there are many ways to keep that ole fruitcake moving year after year! We started to do this once they were "older" and still do - my boys are now 29 and 31 years of age. Once they have families of their own, we expect they will still come to our house on Christmas Eve and then have the day to spend with their own families... at least I hope so.

  11. We would have a big Christmas party with all of my extended family. We would have dinner, followed by games. One favorite game was a gift exchange. Then, my grandma would line up the grandchildren from youngest to oldest and then we would hit a pinata. To make it fair, the candy would be bagged into ziplock baggies and then stuffed into the pinata - one for each child.

  13. Our tradition involves making yummy cinnamon buns and coffee while we go through our Christmas stockings and listening to music. After we open our presents, we watch A Christmas Story which just cracks my son up. We spend the afternoon with my family and do a white elephant gift exchange. Thanks for the fun giveaway! It is nice to relive the memories. :)

  26. I don't have an actual family traditions, per se. We cook, we eat, we open gifts, and it's almost never in the same order each year. LoL. The only "tradition" I have is going to Starbucks on Christmas morning with one of my best friends. This will be our third year doing so.

    ReplyDelete
  27. My favorite tradition is going to pick out our Christmas tree. We get all bundled up and head out to the woods. I always joke around about how we are going to get an artificial tree this year and the kids all protest. It takes us hours to find just the perfect tree and then when we get it home, we realize that we have underestimated how big it actually is. We just laugh and move things around to make room for a huge tree. Great memories.

I let all my grandbabies unwrap their gifts and they can open only 1 to play with. I make them each a little decorated bag with assorted fun stuff to keep them occupied. We put in a family video and watch that. We just have a really good time. Its a little crowded with 9 grandkids but I love it! Thank you so much!

The next morning my husband and I get up and make sure the heat is on high enough for comfort and start a pot of coffee. After we get the gifts ready to give to our kids, we wake them up and sit them in 2 different areas and hand them their gifts. After gift opening, I make Christmas pancakes and hot cocoa for our children.

  41. On Christmas Eve, my family has a large seafood and pasta dinner complete with shrimp cocktail and crab legs. Then we sit down to open gifts which is torture for all the little ones who finish dinner in 10 minutes and then have to wait for all the adults to be done. After presents, we sit down and have dessert which always includes cheesecake among other things.

  68. We have combined the German tradition of opening gifts on Christmas eve (my parents were both from Germany) with the American Christmas morning opening. We each get to pick a single gift and open that Christmas eve. Then, the rest are saved for the morning. It helped when my daughter was small, because she got to open something, and didn't try to stay up (as much)!

  77. For as long as I can remember, we have always had our extended family get-together on Christmas Eve. It started with my grandparents, with all their children and grandchildren, then moved to my parents with their children and grandchildren. Now it consists of myself, my children and grandchildren. The group is smaller, but the warmth is the same. It always left Christmas Day available if some of the families needed to attend a get-together with a spouse's family. It generally worked out well, with the only ones missing or alternating holidays those who couldn't get both sides of the family in on consecutive or at least closely connected days.

  94. A tradition I do with my family every Christmas is play 'Secret Santa', where we draw names out of a hat. Instead of buying for each person which was getting out of control, we put all of our attention and care into one person's, then we all donate money into a pot and sponsor a family that is less fortunate than ours each year. We get details about the children in that family and their ages and what they need ie. boots, socks, and we always buy them some toys too. It feels a lot better than spending excessively on ourselves!

  141. As a family, we attend a Nativity display at an area church. It consists of over 500 creches and mangers of various sizes, and each is unique and special. The items are borrowed from area residents, and are made of paper, marble, wood, ceramics, cloth, woven reeds, papier mache, or other materials.

  143. One tradition my in-laws have is that on Christmas Eve we sing carols after dinner. My husband's aunt printed out lyric books many years ago and she passes them out to everyone so they can sing. Twelve days of Christmas isn't in it though, and we always forget some of the words.

  144. We usually decorate the tree while playing christmas songs. Family has a prime rib dinner with all the fixings. We open presents on christmas Day morning.

  146. The only tradition we have is my mom's Christmas Eve party. The whole family spends most of the day at her house cooking, eating and drinking. Since there's only one small child in the family we don't wait for Christmas morning to open presents, everyone opens them Christmas Eve at night.

  149. When my son was young I started a tradition of going out on xmas eve to see all the lights and decorations. We'd drive all over town. This gave my son something else to think about beside Santa! I also began collection chrimas villages. We'd set them up under the tree and magically on xmas morning, they'd been replaced by gifts.

  152. In our house every Christmas, the nativity scene magically appears one piece at a time. Beginning on Saint Nicholas Day, Santa brings the manger. Then each morning a new piece - angel, shepherd, king, camel, etc - appears, ending with the baby Jesus on Christmas morning. My mother still continues this tradition with her grand-children, and they look in the manger every day during the Christmas season to see what new piece Santa has brought. Thank you for the chance to win.

  154. When I was little my Mom, Sister and I would open presents at our home from "santa". Then we would go to my grandparents and there would be more presents from "santa" and my Grandparents would always say that he stopped there to see us to. It was our favorite thing about getting presents I think!

  155. First we all decorate the Christmas tree together. Then we all bake cookies together and put them out for Santa with a glass of milk. Then we tuck our kids into bed and read them Twas the Night Before Christmas.

  156. Our family has a funny tradition. Since we have a big party on Christmas day. Everyone is elsewhere on Christmas eve. So ever since my 1st daughter has been born we always order pizza on Christmas eve. And we each open 1 gift. It turned into something we did and now we do it every year.

  164. We have a tradition we do with stockings. For the two wks before Christmas we take turns giving each member of our family one gift in their stockings BEFORE Christmas. It's so much fun to watch everyone check their stockings at night to see if today is one of their luck days! Thanks so much! pamelashockley(AT)netscape(DOT)net

  169. My husband usually works on Christmas Eve & Day, so we don't have a lot we do around then, to be honest. We do always have stockings up for us, the munchkin, and the pets too! And we try to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Grinch over those two days. We'd put cookies and carrots out for Santa and his reindeers, but the pets would get to it before them. ;)

  172. Every year we build a gingerbread house, my 5 year old loves it, he is already begging for one! We also make ornaments for the grandparents and of course our own tree. This year I made salt dough ornaments for my son and niece (age 4) to paint,it is so funny, they both think black and brown are Christmas colors, hardly a speck of green and red! Thanks for the giveaway!

  173. My family enjoys watching TV. Every Christmas, we watch It's a Wonderful Life and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (animated version). It's perhaps a strange "tradition," but we enjoy it. Thanks!

  174. We have a big Christmas Eve dinner with the whole family. Then we set out all the luminaries and various people do or don't go to Church for Christmas Eve services. After that, the kids usually pick one present to open and then they disappear for the night! The next morning, we all sit in a circle and each person takes a turn opening one present at a time. I have Christmas music playing non-stop the whole time.
